THE first businesses have signed up to The Journal’s roll of honour to show they are supporting our Think North East First campaign.

Among the first five businesses to join the list were a County Durham software firm, a bed and breakfast in Northumberland, and a landscape photographer working across the North East.

The Journal’s campaign, launched at the end of January, has been encouraging people to buy local products and services to aid businesses in the area during the financial crisis.

And earlier this week, we asked North East organisations to add their name to an online scroll demonstrating their passion for the effort to boost the North East economy during the recession.

One of the first names on the list was that of The Pantry, a delicatessen in Bamburgh, Northumberland, which sources all of its products from the local area.

Julie Spruce, who runs The Pantry, said: “I have always supported the idea of choosing North East produce first. The more good we can do, the more the help goes around, the better.

“I’m in the position of trying to get local support myself so it’s nice to buy locally.

“It’s a case of looking out for each other. I supply people around here and they supply me, and you know each other so there’s that trust between people.”

Julie said she buys in cheese from Doddington and Make me Rich farms and Crab and Kippers from Oxford farm in Berwick.

She also buys in Pumphrey coffee, bread from Heatherslaw Bakery, in Cornhill-on Tweed, and Coquet Valley jams, handmade in Eshottheugh Northumberland.

“I think The Journal’s campaign is fantastic,” Julie added. “The local produce is fantastic and deserves to be promoted and it’s great to see The Journal doing that. I have always stocked as much local produce that I can sell and the suppliers can meet my demand.

“I like to support local businesses so the money stays in our area.”
