THE TELEGRAPH IS CELEBRATING AFTER BEING NAMED AS THE OVERALL WINNER OF THE 2009 NEWCASTLE BEST BAR NONE AWARDS

THE winners of Newcastle’s Best Bar None were announced at a glitzy award ceremony on Sunday at the Civic Centre Banqueting Suite. The annual event gives the nightlife venues of Newcastle a chance to be rewarded and to celebrate the hard work they put in to make Newcastle one of the best cities in Europe to enjoy.

The Telegraph also picked up the Gold award in the Best Pub Category. Manager,Gillaine Armstrong said: “We’re over the moon that our pub was named overall winner as well as Best Pub. We’ve put a lot of hard work into making our pub a great place for our customers, locals and visitors alike. We’re feeling very proud of ourselves.

“We want every customer to enjoy their time at The Telegraph, that’s whywe wanted to achieve the accreditation and the title of overall winner."

As Overall Winner, The Telegraph win the prize of leading on publicity to promote the city of Newcastle as a leading and safe nightlife city. The Newcastle venue was up against strong competition, with a record of seventy two venues being awarded accredited status this year, which also makes Newcastle one of the safest cities to enjoy. Only 21 of those venues could go through to the shortlist to be considered for the Gold, Silver or Bronze place in their award category.

The award ceremony was once again sponsored by drinks giant Diageo. Neil McDonald from Diageo said “We are proud to be associated with The Best Bar None scheme, promoting a Safer Newcastle and responsible drinking”.

Guests were treated to live entertainment from comedy great Brendan Healy and North East musical maestro Jason Isaacs and his swing band. Kind-hearted guests raised much needed money for Metro Radio’s Cash for Kids. Brendan Healy hosted a hilarious fund-raising auction.

Just some of the weird and wonderful items snapped up were a signed and framed Alan Shearer football boot; a framed seat from the 1966 Wembley Cup Final; and a night at the Old Vic, London, where the auction winners will rub shoulders with Ethan Hawke, Kevin Spacey and Director Sam Mendes.

Best Bar None recognises and rewards the responsible bars, pubs and clubs who are genuinely striving to reduce alcohol related disorder and promote responsible drinking. seventy two venues in Newcastle have achieved accredited status and proven that they are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for their customers and staff.
