Great days out

THE North East boasts some of the best adventure facilities in the country. Here are just a few of the adrenalin-pumping pursuits energetic fun-seekers can opt for:
1. Mountain biking
The region has developed a rich infrastructure of cycle routes. Coast to coast along Hadrian’s Way, offers perhaps the toughest challenge, while the Northumberland coastal route serves up undeniably spectacular views of beaches, countryside and castles. Kielder Water and Hamsterley Forest both offer a range of cycle tracks.

2. Surfing
Tynemouth has established itself as the centre of North East surfing, with surf schools and shops offering tuition and equipment rental. For the more adventurous (and more experienced) beaches up and down the coast offer varying conditions, depending on the tide and weather. Redcar, in Cleveland has also become a popular spot to catch some waves.

3. Skiing
Believe it or not the British Norwegian Ski Club (BNSC) operate ski-slope at Allenhead, in the North Pennines. A vintage tractor is used to power the improvised ski life in a farmer’s field. Of course the piste is only available weather permitting, but following the cold snap at the start of this year, members described the conditions as "tremendous". And there’s still time for more snow.

4. Water sports
Kielder Water is unquestionably the watersports capital of the region. The reservoir, managed by Northumbrian Water, offers everything from sailing to kite-surfing, with Leaplish Waterside Park, waterskiing, and wind-surfing all thrown in for good measure. And while the adrenalin junkies get their hit family members can enjoy Tower Knowe Visitor Centre and discover Kielder's history.

5. Horse riding
If you’re not a fan of bikes but still want to get off the beaten track and enjoy the sights of the region, horse trails offer the chance to ride out you favourite western fantasy. Guided tours from farm to farm, or circular routes staying in the same spot ensure all abilities and appetites for adventure are catered for.
