Shearer backs our campaign goals

NEWCASTLE United legend Alan Shearer today throws his backing behind our campaign to help the region’s economy ride out the recession.

We have asked families to help boost local cashflow by thinking North East England first whenever they spend.

Now former United star Shearer has added his name to the list of high profile backers supporting our cause. The former England striker said: “I am delighted to get behind The Journal’s Think North East First campaign.”

“I am proud to be from this region and I believe it is really important that everyone pulls together when times are tough for many people and businesses.

“By highlighting the important part people can play in supporting local companies, this campaign is performing an important role in helping to ensure the North East economy remains robust during the downturn and is well placed to benefit once confidence returns.”

The former Newcastle United captain is urging readers to do all they can to help support North East industry.

The Journal has already published a list of everyday products, which, just by putting on your shopping list, will help secure jobs in the region.

Through the website our online readers have been sending us their suggestions and words of support.

One blogger got in touch to tell us about www.foodlocalfood.com, which allows shoppers to search for local producers by type of food. Another reader called our campaign “great”.

One blogger called Samantha said: “I was interested to read your article, listing many of our region’s large companies and branches. I would like to see a similar article on small and medium-sized enterprises. The company I work for does some excellent work in Newcastle, and some large names in various industries, especially within the NE.”
