CRAIG LYNCH'S injury-time equaliser rescued a point for Sunderland against Newcastle United as the as the local rivals fought out their second draw of the season in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League.
Just as at St James' Park in September, the sides shared four goals.
United led twice at the Stadium of Light through strikes from Nile Ranger – on his first appearance in a black and white shirt since March – and Aussie Bradden Inman sandwiching Connor Wickham's fifth of the season for the Black Cats, with all three goals coming in the first half.
Sunderland should have levelled from the penalty spot midway through the second period, but Adam Reed's penalty struck the woodwork.
It looked like Newcastle had done enough to earn the victory until Lynch had the final say.
Newcastle opened the scoring in the eighth minute on Wearside, when Wales international midfielder David Vaughan was caught in possession by Inman just inside the United half.
He threaded a pass between Sunderland's centre-backs and Ranger outpaced James Armstrong before finishing from inside the box.
Sunderland levelled in the 20th minute after left-back David Ferguson burst into the penalty area on the left and squared for Wickham to slide home his fifth league goal of the season – three of which have now come against Newcastle.
Ferguson was unlucky to see a goalbound header hit his team-mate Roarie Deacon two minutes later, but Newcastle looked the more likely side to score and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made an excellent stop to deny Curtis Good just after the half-hour.
Pickford could do nothing to stop the visitors going back in front in the 37th minute, however, Sunderland failing to clear a loose ball on the edge of the box and Inman's mis-kicked effort bobbling into the bottom left-hand corner.
Conor Newton conceded the penalty for a foul on Wickham in the 66th minute, but Reed's kick hit the base of the left-hand post and spun agonisingly across the face of goal and clear.
Lynch pulled it out of the fire for Sunderland in the second minute of added time, picking up the ball in midfield and going past two players before calmly slotting home.
