SAFC captain Lee Cattermole hopes for recall

LEE Cattermole is pushing for a Sunderland recall with doubts over whether David Vaughan will make tomorrow’s Premier League trip to Manchester United.

Having named an unchanged side for their 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, injuries could force three changes at Old Trafford.

Simon Mignolet and John O’Shea are definitely out, with a fractured eye socket and torn hamstring respectively, and question marks over Vaughan could lead to a recall for club captain Cattermole.

A substitute in four of 10 Premier League matches this term, the Teessider has fallen behind Jack Colback in the pecking order and has not played a game in its entirety since August’s Wear-Tyne derby.

“Vaughany’s got a groin strain, so we’ll see how he is,” revealed manager Steve Bruce. “He’s touch and go.” Vaughan has started five of the last six games, missing the draw with West Bromwich Albion through injury. The combative Cattermole (pictured right) is far from a like-for-like replacement, but fearful of a backlash in the Red Devils’ first Premier League home game since their derby demolition against City, Bruce was anyway likely to stiffen his midfield.

Last week, Bruce turned to fit-again David Meyler instead of Cattermole as his final substitute against Villa.

“He’s disappointed but it’s a huge test for him,” Bruce said. “It hasn’t gone quite as well as he would have expected it to this season. He’s had to overcome two serious injuries.

“I wouldn’t look too much into the Meyler substitution, it was more for Meyler himself.

“I just thought the way Meyler plays he might stem the tide a little bit. At that time I thought we were struggling a bit in midfield.

“But Catts is right in my thoughts (for tomorrow) because Vaughan’s a doubt.”
