I will be a better player next season – Da Silva

PAULO Da Silva insists his best is yet to come in a Sunderland shirt, but that after a season of adjustment to the “pugilistic” demands of the Premier League, he will prove himself in the next campaign.
The Paraguayan international joined the Black Cats from Mexican side Toluca last summer – signing a three-year contract before work permit problems delayed his arrival on Wearside.
That and the anticipated bedding-in period left the 30-year-old expecting to play a limited role during his first year at the Stadium of Light.
Da Silva has started 17 of Sunderland’s 39 games this season, completing 90 minutes 14 times and making a further four appearances from the bench.
Yet the South American believes more run-out next season will make it his “big one”, when the club can expect to witness a “big difference” in his performances.
“It does take a bit of time to adjust to the league and to the environment,” said Da Silva. “But I am very happy here, I am very pleased with the amount of football I have played this season.
“When I arrived, I did not think I would have this much time on the pitch during my first season of English football because I knew this season was always going to be about adapting. But I am definitely looking forward to next season.
“That is the big one for me and I know everyone will see a big difference in me. I expect to be playing a lot more than this one.
“There is no doubt that for those coming from South America, there is a big difference. The pace of the league, and the way of playing is a lot more pugilistic. When I came here I had to adapt to so many things.
“Now I have to fight for my place in the team and I am working hard towards that goal. But this season, even if I am not one of the first XI, I am always there to help the other ones. I am convinced I will win my fight to earn a spot in the team.”
