Anton is just glad that he's playing

Anton Ferdinand in action for Sunderland reserves

AFTER three outings in the unfamiliar territory of left-back, Anton Ferdinand has pledged to play “anywhere” for Sunderland. Given his stats, it seems best he at least plays somewhere.

The 25-year-old has figured in just 17 of the Black Cats’ 33 games this season, due largely to an ankle injury.

In those 33 games, Sunderland have kept nine clean sheets (including a goalless Carling Cup tie lost, on penalties, to Aston Villa), and of those Ferdinand has played in six, completing the full 90 minutes in four.

Thus it is that when he starts and finishes, his side tend to hold out the opposition – as in their last two Premier League games against Fulham and, on Tuesday, Bolton Wanderers, when – recently recovered after 10 weeks out from that ankle knock – Ferdinand has been deployed at left full-back.

Fine, he says, he is just happy to be playing his part. And the versatile star believes that a continuation of the same defending and the odd win can only serve to propel Sunderland up the table.
