“But we still hope that, before the window closes, we can strengthen in that part of the field again. With the injuries to the likes of (Nyron) Nosworthy and (Anton) Ferdinand, we are still very short of defensive options at the moment.
“We’re chipping away at various different things, and we’re hoping to make progress. Whether that’ll happen in the next few days, I’m not so sure, but we’ll keep trying because we need to do something before the window closes.” Bruce also conceded he has anther problem to deal with as the constant speculation surrounding Kewyne Jones is having a negative impact on the striker and with it the team. He said: “It’s been a difficult week for him.
“We had a conversation with him on Friday and I thought he did okay, but no more than okay. I sincerely hope he wants to be with us. I’ve talked about the Liverpool thing and to turn his head on a loan deal is quite upsetting. But I’ve said my piece on it. It won’t happen, that’s for sure.
“We just need something to kick-start things and get us going again. The one thing you have to do is work hard, stay together collectively and hope that it turns round because we all know that we have good ability in the team.”
