Sunderland boss looking for a big reaction

Although Sunderland’s league form is a worry – they have won just once in their last 12 games and have moved to within four points of the drop zone – results do not reflect the team’s ability.

That is crucial for Bruce, who hopes to have several key players, including goalkeeper Craig Gordon and midfielders Lee Cattermole and Andy Reid, back in contention at the weekend. Centre-back Michael Turner is also available again after a four game suspension because of his contentious sending off in the defeat at Manchester before Christmas which should shore up a leaky back line on the south coast.

And, with Liverpool and Manchester United already out of the FA Cup following shock defeats to Leeds United and Reading respectively, the competition is wide open this season.

Bruce said: “I always treat the cup competitions with the utmost respect. Two big clubs are out and you don’t see Manchester United and Liverpool go out in the third round very often. Anything is possible.

“It’s a tough draw, that’s for sure. Portsmouth have had their own problems, but they came up here, got a draw and we will give them respect. They might have had problems off the pitch, but they’ve got some good players on it.”
