Russell Anderson's exit leaves Cats short

SUNDERLAND allowed one defender to leave yesterday, but despite Guy Demel expecting a bid for his services “soon”, there is no replacement on the horizon.

The Black Cats have released Russell Anderson – an obvious move when viewed in the context of how little football he has played for them, but arguably a risky one given the lack of defensive alternatives.

The Scottish centre-back’s Wearside career effectively ended long ago, but he was twice needed as an unused substitute in December, against Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers.

With no defenders expected to return for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea (though hamstring victims Kieran Richardson and Boudewijn Zenden, who can fill in at left-back should), it suggests manager Steve Bruce – who will resist interest in Nyron Nosworthy from Wolves and West Bromwich Albion – is confident of landing at least one of the two full-backs he is hoping for in January. Defenders Nosworthy (knee), Anton Ferdinand (ankle) and John Mensah (calf) are still missing, and Michael Turner suspended.

Hamburg right-back Demel (pictured) knows of Sunderland’s interest, but warned of competition from AC Milan and an un-named English club.

“I am aware Sunderland FC is interested in me, I have been further told that one or more club from England and also AC Milan would be ready to move for me,” said the 28-year-old Ivorian, who is at the African Cup of Nations and therefore claims not to have kept abreast of all the rumours.

“But I am still a Hamburg player and have liked it at Hamburg very much. I am still part of this squad.”

Demel made it clear he will not agitate to leave Germany, but expects developments soon.

“Hamburg would need to agree with Sunderland FC before I am unable to negotiate anything,” he warned.
