Lorik Cana: Cats will miss Cattermole

Despite not yet being regulars with their respective clubs, Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere and Everton’s Jack Rodwell appear to have more popular support when it comes to nominating uncapped players to reinforce England’s midfield.

Cana, though, fully appreciates the talents of Sunderland’s £6m summer signing, and his importance to the Black Cats’ cause.

Even before he was stretchered off on Saturday, Cattermole’s season had been disrupted by injury, but it has not stopped the combative duo striking up an instant and highly effective partnership at the heart of midfield.

Cana therefore shared Bruce’s relief that Cattermole’s injury was to his medial, rather than the even more serious cruciate, ligaments.

“I hope Lee is not out for too long because he is a very important player for our team,” said Cana. “We don’t have 25 top players like Manchester United so each player here is very important. We are going to miss him.

“He’s great at pressing opposition and is a great footballer. He can play football, he’s not just about making tackles. He helps me a lot on the pitch and we work a lot together.

“It was amazing to find a good understanding with him from the very first game.”
