“There’s only two of those guys and I knew that I would get my chance.
“It’s all about me taking the chance when I get it and I’d like to think I have.”
Despite his modesty, Campbell’s growing understanding with Bent is a definite threat to Jones’ standing as first-choice centre-forward and the former Manchester United youngster revealed he has built up a close friendship with his strike partner following their time together at Tottenham.
He said: “Me and Darren are similar, so people thought we wouldn’t be able to play together, but we can. I have also played with Kenwyne and played well, like we did on Tuesday.
“Darren has played well with him in the past. We have three decent strikers and it’s good that we look like we can all play together.
“Me and Darren knew each other at Tottenham, so it has made it easier for us both to settle up here. We are both newbies and we share the same interests.
“We are quite big mates on and off the pitch.
“We went through a similar rough patch at Tottenham as each other, that’s probably why we have hit if off.
“Hopefully now that we have both come up here we can enjoy football again, training again and being part of the team.”
Campbell was one of seven summer signings by Bruce as the new manager looked to get a strong core of his own players in a dressing room he still feels can be too fragile away from home. It is a mentality Bruce is determined to change and Campbell is confident he will succeed.
He added: “We had a meeting on Monday and the manager told us all that we need to change the mentality here.
“We need to hammer home games and finish teams off. We are hit and miss in the league, but I’m sure we can win more than we lose.
“I have not been here too long but the players say that there’s a lot changing under this manager. The mood around the place is changing and you can see it among the fans.
“They are sensing that things are on the up here. People stop you in the street and tell you that they are enjoying seeing this side develop and we feel like it is. Things are definitely looking up here.”
