Bruce: Cana can be a big hit

Having bided his time in the transfer market this summer, Bruce is keen to get the remaining three players he wants through the door as quickly as possible.

He added: “We are interested in Chamakh, we’ve said that. But that is as far as it has gone so far. We are still trying to persuade Bordeaux to let us speak to him.

“We are yet to agree a fee, but hopefully we can get something done soon.”

Sunderland were beaten 2-0 by Benfica in the opening game of the Amsterdam tournament last night, but Bruce was happy with the workout.

He said: “It was a good test for us and we’ve come through it without any serious injuries.

“Carlos Edwards needed six stitches after a clash of heads but he is okay.”

MARK Hughes is determined to talk about players that have already been signed by Manchester City, rather than John Terry.

The England captain has been on the radar of the Eastlands manager all summer, but Chelsea have insisted he is going nowhere and have rejected several offers from free-spending City.

Speaking on the club’s pre-season tour of South Africa, Hughes said: “We keep on dismissing certain individuals and keep on giving the same response.

“There is no value from our point of view to keep on saying the same things. I imagine from your view you are pretty fed up with me saying the same thing.

“I much rather talk about the players we have signed. That’s where my focus will lie for the next few days.”
