Cats boss is setting sights on Chamakh

"I know he was impressed with the set- up here when he came for talks but it’s simply a matter of geographical location and that’s not something we can affect.
"What’s pleasing, however, is that it shows the intent of the club going forward that we are trying to bring players in of his calibre and we will continue to pursue other targets."
Sunderland are understood to have three alternative targets to Crouch and Bruce has admitted an interest in Chamakh (pictured left), who said that Arsenal no longer appeared keen to sign him.
The Morocco front man, who netted 13 times in 25 starts as Bordeaux claimed the Ligue 1 title last season, claimed yesterday that the Black Cats were one of four clubs who had agreed a fee for him and personal terms –
along with Fulham, Spurs and Blackburn.
But Spurs can be discounted with a move for Crouch in the offing and Chamakh’s desire to move to England appears to spell the end of Lyon’s chances of keeping him in France – despite their president, Jean-Michel Aulas, claiming that his club would welcome Chamakh with "open arms".
"When I see that Chamakh wishes to leave, but that people would authorise a departure to England but perhaps not France, it is regrettable," Aulas said.
"Because we would be ready to welcome him with open arms."
Another option for Bruce is Tottenham’s unwanted forward Darren Bent, but the club are only prepared to push through that deal if the player lowers his wage demands and his club are prepared to lower their valuation of around £12m.
Sunderland are certainly keen on him but the trail has gone cold since the club held initial talks and Bruce does not feel he represents value for money with his current wage demands.
Bruce currently has three senior forwards – Fraizer Campbell, Kenwyne Jones and David Healy – at his disposal. He wants at least two more and is considering whether to promote home-grown talent Martyn Waghorn to his senior squad after the teenager impressed in the early weeks of pre-season.
