Steve Bruce faces a signing struggle

“Ideally we’re looking at four strikers. Because of this obscene transfer window that we have now we’ve got to have a squad that’s capable. If someone goes down in September then you’re goosed for three or four months.
“The players understand I need four strikers, eight midfielders and eight defenders. That’s the ideal, but it’s about getting that quality which is obviously difficult.”
And, while Bruce has reassured Kenwyne Jones about his future, there was also a warning he will not be allowed to operate in his comfort zone because of the competition for places he wants to create.
He said: “Kenwyne is a very good player, but if we’re going to be established and move forward we need three or four strikers.
“I don’t want any more interest in him. I want him to be part of the four strikers.”
Bruce has also been pleased with the reaction of the players to his arrival as manager as he dismissed last season’s problems with discipline and, at times, application.
He added: “I’ve worked with them for a week or so and they’ve been terrific. Whatever has happened in the past I ain’t bothered about, it’s what we do from now on. I know in my mind what type of team I want and anyone who knows me will know what type of team I like.
“I think if I can do that, the supporters will be happy.”
:: DEFENDER Paul McShane will be out for at least three months and needs knee surgery after being injured in the 4-0 friendly win at Darlington on Thursday night.
However, keeper Marton Fulop has returned to training after overcoming an Achilles injury.
