But a link to Leeds midfield Fabian Delph that emerged yesterday can be discounted. The £4m-rated teenager was watched by the Black Cats but is considered too raw for the Premier League, and they will not be pursuing their interest.
Bruce will not be working with former team-mate Dwight Yorke, either, who was one of the seven players released by the club prior to his appointment.
The veteran midfielder is set to return to Australia’s A-League, with Newcastle Jets emerging as his most likely destination.
The Jets’ technical director Branko Culina has confirmed the club’s interest in the 38-year-old, who played in Trinidad & Tobago’s do-or-die World Cup qualifier against Mexico last night.
“I was aware there were some discussions previously with Dwight and he was a huge influence at Sydney FC,” Culina said.
“Players like that are terrific for the game and I am sure they have a lot to offer but you also have to look at your own situation and see whether it is feasible. “ Meanwhile, Sunderland’s pre-season plans continue to take shape with the announcement of a friendly at Hearts in August.
The Black Cats will meet the Edinburgh side at Tynecastle on August 8, just seven days before the Premier League season starts.
The game could give former Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon the chance to return to his old club for the first time since his £9m move to Wearside in 2007.
Sunderland have already announced they will take part in the Amsterdam Tournament – which will also feature Atlético Madrid and Benfica as well as hosts Ajax.
That tournament will take place from July 24-26.
