Ricky Sbragia needs more time, says Peter Reid

Reid, now manager of Thailand, has been saddened by the demise of three North East teams. “I was in Thailand and I stayed awake until 2 o’clock to watch it (Sunderland’s defeat at Portsmouth),” he explained. “It’s a bit of a struggle, not just for Sunderland but for the other North East teams, which is a bit of a sadness, really, considering the fanaticism of the crowds and the support the three teams have. In an ideal world, you’d want them all in the Premiership. It’s the toss of a coin but I’d go with Newcastle (to be relegated) and, sadly, Boro as well.”

Even if his prediction comes true, Reid expects to see Alan Shearer remain in the St James’s Park dugout. “I think he’ll stay there,” he said. “He’s got the bit between his teeth. He was a great player and he’s got the ability to be a great manager.”
