Calum Davenport must earn move

“Players always talk a good game, but it’s when they play that they have to deliver and in the last few games he’s been excellent. He has to continue that form into the West Brom game and I won’t accept anything less from him.”

While Davenport is an obvious candidate to sign over the summer, his name is just one on a long list of potential candidates.

The Black Cats have a slew of players that are out of contract in the summer including Liam Miller, Arnau, Dwight Yorke, Nick Colgan, Darren Ward and David Connolly – and it is difficult to envisage any of them being kept on the playing staff.

“We’ve got to buy in new players and we know that,” Sbragia said.

“We know some players might be unhappy and coming to the end of their contracts – I just feel that we need a change.

“We always need a change, if you don’t you become complacent. Players become complacent and we need to bring quality players in.”
