Barnsley Under-18s 0, Sunderland Under-18s 1

VISITORS Sunderland put their midweek cup defeat behind them to extend their lead at the top of the table on Saturday.

The young Black Cats started the game strongly and deservedly took the lead after 20 minutes through a well-worked move. Liam Noble played the ball out wide for Brett Elliott to power past the Barnsley defence to cross for the advancing Nathan Wilson, who hammered the ball home with a terrific right-foot strike.

Coach Kevin Ball said afterwards: “I was delighted with the way the lads played, bouncing back after the midweek defeat.”

SUNDERLAND: Wilson, Harrison, Madden, Laing, Watson, Wilson, Elliott (Adams 60), L Noble, Lynch, Galer, Fletcher (Laidler 75). Subs (not used): Bagnall, King, Armstrong, Marrs
