CHAMPIONS Sunderland rounded off their league programme in style with a deserved win over Liverpool at the Academy on Saturday.
Both sides fielded young teams in consideration of Liverpool’s involvement in the FA Youth Cup Final against Arsenal. Sunderland had the better of the first period and broke the deadlock by taking the lead one minute before the interval through Jordan Laidler.
The Merseysiders equalised on 70 minutes through John Flanagan, however Sunderland hit back to get the winner five minutes later from a set-piece, James Armstrong, son of ex-Sunderland player Gordon, scoring from a 25-yard shot.
