Manchester United U-18s 2 Newcastle United U-18s 1

NEWCASTLE United’s Under-18s slipped to a second straight defeat at Manchester United.

Dan Taylor levelled after Larnell Cole had given the Red Devils the lead but Luke Giverin’s strike denied Newcastle a merited share of the spoils.

Manchester United had knocked Newcastle out of the FA Youth Cup and there was to be no retribution in the league for Joe Joyce’s side.

The deadlock was broken when Cole produced a good finish and curled a shot into the top corner from outside the penalty area. Newcastle stormed back to level within five minutes, Dan Taylor moving into double figures. Ryan McCorrigan’s cross picked out the head of Taylor at the near post and got the better of Tom Thorpe.

The Magpies threatened to take the lead after the break with home keeper Sam Johnstone saving well from McGorrigan while Jamie Smith had a header cleared off the line.

Tom Lawrence had a shot blocked but it was the visitors who dictated play in the second period. Red Devils substitute Giverin got the clincher with a shot into the roof of the net.
