A LAST-minute Dan Taylor goal gave Newcastle United’s U18s their first home win and ended a barren run of six FA Premier Academy League games without a victory.
United opened the scoring on seven minutes when Michael Richardson found Marcus Maddison, who turned his defender before breaking into space and chipping outcoming Rams goalkeeper James Severs.
Derby were level five minutes later when defender Alex Nicholson conceded a free-kick.
Lewis Storey cleared the set play only for Rams full-back Ryan Betts to put a killer ball into the United box, where defender Perry Goldsbury headed home after rising above Remi Streete.
Severs then saved from Sam Adjei and in first-half injury time, Richardson should have put United back in front, only for the forward to fire a half-volley across the keeper and wide.
Newcastle went close again after the break when Maddison’s wind-assisted cross bounced off the top of the bar and out of play.
Taylor was then put in on goal from Jak Alnwick’s long clearance, the forward beat his marker and rounded Severs but, off balance, missed the open goal.
United were almost punished for the miss three minutes later when Derby sub Aaron Cole beat Alnwck after turning, but saw his effort rattle the outside of the post.
With 20 minutes left, Ben Sayer’s long free-kick into the box eluded everyone and Severs was forced into making a smart save to push the ball wide for a corner.
Maddison’s resulting flag kick saw Taylor rise in a crowded penalty area only for his header to be cleared off the line.
Callum Ball should have put Derby into the lead, rounding Alnwick –but unable to get a shot at goal, he found Kane Richards whose shot hit the outside of the near post.
With the game heading for a draw Taylor latched on to Alnwick’s wind assisted 90th-minute clearance and his 25-yard volley found the bottom-right corner, giving Severs no chance.
