A CLOSE-range Greg McDermott strike earned Newcastle United U-18s a point against Manchester United in the FA Premier Academy League at Carrington.

McDermott’s goal was cancelled out before the break after an evenly fought first half, but the Magpies had the better of the second period.

“There wasn’t much in it in the first half when there were chances at both ends but, against a very good United outfit, we were by far the better side after the break,” said Newcastle coach Willie Donachie.

A disputed free-kick given against Patrick Nzuzi led to Manchester’s equaliser which was headed home from eight yards.
