Ngo Baheng could have nosed the visitors in front following an incisive breakaway on the half-hour mark but his deft dink went just wide.
Chris Moore was making a farewell appearance for Bay before a move to Darlington and the former Magpie youngster went close, his thunderous strike kept out by Soderberg.
The Seahorse pressure eventually told and four minutes before the break Paul Chow headed home a corner.
Bell's long throw-ins had caused problems all night and Bay's answer to Rory Delap had a major hand in his side's third on 61 minutes; his missile landing on the head of skipper David Coulson who flashed beyond Soderberg from close range.
United chased a response and Shane Ferguson's low shot was deflected onto the base of the post by keeper Kindley in the 71st minute.
Whitley, though, had chances to extend their advantage.
