Whitley Bay 3 Newcastle Reserves 1

WHITLEY Bay reached the final of the Northumberland Senior Cup after a deserved win over Newcastle United Reserves at Hillheads.

The Magpies, holders of the trophy, were far from their best throughout the game and a vociferous home crowd of 774 helped roar the FA Vase semi-finalists to a memorable success.

A ferocious start saw a goal after just five minutes; former Tranmere trainee Paul Robinson swapping passes with Lee Kerr before smashing home left footed from 20 yards.

United, though, found a reply within six minutes as Wesley Ngo Baheng made a scoring return from a four-month hamstring layoff after Patrick McLaughlin’s slick through ball

The Northern League outfit dominated the rest of the half and Phil Bell had a brave header kept out by Swedish keeper Ole Soderberg.

The home fans thought their side had regained the lead when Kerr, a former United trialist, saw a 20-yard drive cannon off the advertising hoardings before nestling in the rear of Soderberg's net just moments later.
