Newcastle United Res 4, Ashington 0

NEWCASTLE Reserves gave the watching Alan Shearer his first piece of managerial silverware with a comprehensive four-goal victory in the Northumberland Tynetec Senior Cup Final at St James’s Park.

Brave Ashington gave their all but the Northern Leaguers were outclassed by United’s rising young stars.

Spanish striker Xisco, the only senior player in the Newcastle side, opened the scoring after just 70 seconds, turning to fire home from 10 yards after a Kazenga LuaLua shot stuck at his feet.

The Colliers had their moments, notably when Robbie Cockburn glanced a Ross Atkinson cross agonisingly wide of the left post with his head in the 25th minute.

But United held the upper hand and within two minutes had extended their lead to 2-0 as a Frank Danquah cross landed at the feet of centre-half Ben Tozer who, seven yards out, sidefooted coolly past Kyle Hayes.

Eight minutes after the break, United caught out Ashington with a quick free-kick and when Slovenian Haris Vuckic’s 20-yard drive was only parried by Hayes, Xisco moved in to crash the loose ball high into the net.
