NEWCASTLE’S sharp-shooting youngsters notched up their sixth win in succession to stay a point ahead of Sunderland at the top of Academy League Group D.
Eighteen goals in six games tells its tale of United’s forward power – but coach Kenny Wharton praised his defenders after the victory.
He said: “They defended well and passed it out well. The midfielders did well and supported the defence and the forwards.
“They’ve all played well, with good football, and controlled the game. On top of scoring three goals we’ve created a lot of other chances. It was one of the best displays of the season.”
It was a sweet and sour afternoon, though, for United centre-back Jeff Henderson, who nodded his side in front after 12 minutes from a Phil Airey cross but was sent off four minutes from time after a professional foul on Nathan Modest, giving Liam Palmer a penalty consolation for the Owls.
Swedish keeper Ole Soderberg, returning after two months out with a broken wrist, had little to do.
Nile Ranger, collecting a pass from Brad Inman after 24 minutes, made it 2-0 with his 13th Academy goal of the season.
Conor Newton hit the third 13 minutes after the break, shooting under keeper Pratt after a one-two with Sam Ameobi.
NEWCASTLE UNITED: Soderberg, Airey, Ferguson, Inman, Henderson, Tavernier, Newton, McDermott (Williams 39), Ranger (Bath 61), Ameobi, McCrudden. Substitutes (not used): Leadbitter, Bell, Johnson.
