Newcastle Utd U-18s 1, Chelsea U-18s 0

A DOUBLE dose of Irish cream helped Newcastle to a late victory over Chelsea’s highly-rated youngsters at Little Benton.

Paddy McLaughlin’s right-wing corner dropped to fellow Irishman Michael McCrudden who struck a firm 16-yard right-foot shot through a packed area and high into the left corner of the net.

But while the taste of victory over one of the country’s premier youth sides was sweet, coach Kenny Wharton warned: “The result was better than the performance.

“We gave the ball away far too often, and didn’t use it well enough when we had it. But perhaps the victory will give the lads a bit more confidence.”

NEWCASTLE UNITED Under-18s: Soderberg, Tavernier, Ferguson, Bath, Morris (sub Taylor 51), Grieve, Godsmark, Doninger, Neary (sub McCrudden 31), McLaughlin, Foster (sub Airey 45). Subs (not used): Folan, Wrightson, Johnson.
