DANNY Simpson has promised there will be no let-up in the last few months of his Newcastle United career.
The Magpies have long since abandoned their attempts to persuade the full-back to sign an extension to his contract, which expires this summer.
In January it became crystal clear Simpson has no future at St James’ Park.
Newcastle signed right-back Mathieu Debuchy and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who can also play there.
The arrival of left-back Massadio Haïdara also gives manager Alan Pardew the option of using Davide Santon in that slot.
And it came as no surprise to see Simpson talking to Wigan Athletic about a transfer, which fell through.
Despite all that, however, Simpson was selected for last week’s Europa League game in Metalist Kharkiv – Debuchy was ineligible, Yanga-Mbiwa at centre-back and Santon injured.
He hopes he can earn more games in the coming weeks. “It’s been a tough few months but I’ve got a good relationship with the manager who knows my situation with the club,” said the former Manchester United defender.
“I’m the type of player who trains hard no matter what’s going on. I think the manager
might have seen that and maybe that’s why he gave me the nod in Kharkiv.
“It was good to repay him by playing my part in getting a win.
“I’m a professional footballer and I’m a Newcastle player now.
