SHOLA Ameobi admits that Newcastle United must make better starts if they are to climb up the Premier League table.
Newcastle lost to West Ham on Sunday after a dreadful opening period that saw them not registering a shot on goal until the 26th minute. They were also two down by 20 minutes in Bruges last week, and Ameobi admits that the club need to be brighter to get over their Premier League slump.
He said: “There’s victories that you can take and teams deserve, but I thought we didn’t start well enough and the game went on from there. You have to get out of the blocks well in the Premier League but our start was a bit lacklustre, which is a bit disappointing because it was a big chance for us to get up the table against a side that have done all right.
“With Andy (Carroll) and Nobby (Kevin Nolan) coming back as well and both managers having managed both clubs it was a big game and the big disappointment was that they dominated that first half and we gave ourselves a mountain to climb. They were always going to be difficult to break down – Sam’s teams always are – and it was disappointing we couldn’t take advantage of our home advantage.”
