MODIBO Maiga’s dream move to Newcastle United is in tatters after the Mali international failed his medical.
Maiga was hoping to sign a five-and-a-half year deal and seal a £6 million move to St James’ Park in the next fortnight. However, following a medical over two days in London, the deal is off.
Maiga even asked for a second opinion with independent doctors, but Newcastle’s medics weren’t convinced and the £6 million transfer from Sochaux was abandoned.
His agent Karim Aklil said: “I am disappointed by the turn of events. Modibo is in perfect physical condition and this was confirmed by specialists.
“I am surprised by what has happened since his medical and the diagnosis established by doctors authorised by the club.
“I am convinced that the future will give us a reason and that Modibo will prove his effectiveness. He remains one of the best strikers in France.”
Meanwhile, a meeting will now take place between Sochaux’s top brass and the striker’s representatives. United have been tracking Maiga since August when the two clubs came close to completing a deal on deadline day but were beaten by the clock.
Sochaux had initially threatened Fifa action over Newcastle’s handling of the transfer five months ago. However, United managed to come to an agreement with the club to bring the 24-year-old to Tyneside.
Maiga had spoken of his desire to pull on a black and white shirt and said earlier this year: “All players dream of playing for a club like that and I hope it will happen, either this winter or in the summer.”
United declined to comment on the situation last night.
As his side prepares to face Swansea at St James’ Park, Magpies boss Alan Pardew launched a staunch defence of Davide Santon and James Perch – as he insists his makeshift defence can turn United into a mean machine once more.
