Change of plan for tribute to Gary Speed

NEWCASTLE United have scaled back their tribute to former midfielder Gary Speed, at his widow’s request.

The Wales manager’s death prompted an outpouring of grief across football.

The Magpies had arranged for a singer to lead the sell-out crowd in a rendition of the Welsh hymn, Bread of Heaven, while supporters in the East Stand held black-and-white cards depicting his old squad number, 11.

Speed’s widow Louise thanked the club for the tribute, but asked they delay it so she can be there in person. She will be at another of his ex-clubs, Leeds United, tomorrow.

Newcastle’s next home game is against Welsh side Swansea, on December 17, when the tribute will now take place.

There will still be a minute’s applause before kick-off, while the programme has a picture of Speed on its cover, and a four-page tribute inside.
