YOHAN Cabaye has told Newcastle United they need to win Saturday’s game against Chelsea – and last week’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United should give them the belief to do so.
The televised visit of Chelsea marks the end of the Magpies’ most difficult phase of the season.
It started with defeat at Manchester City – their first reverse of the league campaign – but Cabaye said their return to the city seven days later showed lessons had been learned.
The Red Devils laid siege to ten-man Newcastle’s goal in the final ten minutes of the game, but having taken the lead through a fortuitous rebound off Javier Hernández they would be hard-pushed to begrudge the Magpies their point after a heroic defensive display. Midfielder Cabaye wants to see them build on that in front of the TV cameras this week.
“We learned from the City game,” he explained. “We learned not to give Man United too much respect. It was important to play higher up the pitch and I think we did well. Against Chelsea we have to play like we did at Old Trafford.
“It was a very good result for us, we are delighted. We wanted after the Man City game to show a lot of spirit and I think during the first half we played well. In the second half Man United played much better than in the first half but I think we played well and it was a good performance.
“We didn’t want to lose the game so the players showed a lot of commitment. I think for us to get one point against Man U is good.”
While Newcastle go into the game with confidence high, the Blues have failed to match the standards set since Roman Abramovich bought the club.
