Tim Krul keeps hopes of first team alive

TIM Krul has thrown down an early marker in the race to begin the coming Premier League season as Newcastle United’s first choice goalkeeper.

The 23-year-old made a sensational senior debut for Holland over the weekend, keeping a clean sheet as they drew 0-0 away to Brazil.

Krul was in fine form throughout what was an assured display, saving well from Brazil stars Robinho and Neymar in front of 48,000 fans in the North Eastern city of Goiana.

The former Under-21s skipper could well get a chance to repeat his heroics as early as Wednesday night, when the Dutch take on Uruguay in Montevideo.

Krul will be hoping to steer his country to a repeat of their World Cup semi-final victory over the South Americans, but the 6ft 2in shot-stopper faces stiff competition in his quest to nail down a starting spot at St James’ Park.

Finishing the season as the man between the sticks, Krul’s 21 appearances in United colours marginally edged out the 18 of Steve Harper – who was injured for part of the season – as the pair shared the work-load between them.

Magpies manager Alan Pardew has been at pains to stress that all of his senior keepers have a fighting chance of kicking off the new campaign, and his contingent has been further swelled by the return of Fraser Forster following a successful loan spell north of the border.

The 23-year-old is now back in the North East after helping Celtic to Scottish Cup glory and second spot in the SPL, making 44 appearances for the Glasgow side.

Krul was not the only United player on international duty over the weekend.
