He has only started eight games this season and even saw right-back Danny Simpson play instead of him on the right side of midfield against Everton last weekend.

The Journal understands Guthrie will be made available for transfer at the end of the season, although the ex-Liverpool prospect still hopes to prove his worth before then.

He said: “It’s been a frustrating season for me. I missed the start of the season with a bad injury, and the lads who have played have done really well.

“It’s always difficult when you’re not playing, and then with little niggly injuries picked up after being out of the team for so long.

“When you come in, it’s hard to get going again. Hopefully, I can get a few games under my belt between now and the end of the season.”
