Big Sam Allardyce has the final say

Sam Allardyce

NEWCASTLE United came back down to earth with a bump as Jason Roberts’ late strike brought their fantastic run of wins to a screeching halt.

It also meant delight for former United boss Sam Allardyce, who’s grimly resolute Blackburn Rovers side proved too obstinate for Chris Hughton’s men.

Roberts beat Mike Williamson in the air before rolling a low shot past Tim Krul in the 81st minute to sneak victory for the visitors in a strangely low-key game that appeared to be ambling towards a draw.

After the euphoria of the Tyne-Wear derby and the win at the Emirates, it was a hugely disappointing evening for Hughton and his side - who still appear unable to break down teams who come to St James’ Park to counter-attack.

And there may be further repercussions for United with midfielder Joey Barton facing possible retrospective action over what appeared to be a punch on Rovers opening goalscorer Morten Gamst Pederson.

United had started poorly and were made to pay for Cheik Tioté’s hesitancy in the opening minutes when Brett Emerton nicked the ball from the Ivorian’s toe and guided into the path of Pederson, who hammered past Krul.

It was meant to be a wake up call but in truth United were disappointing for most of the half, only carving out half-chances as Allardyce’s side recreated the kind of cynical but effective football that saw him hounded out of St James’ two years ago.

They belatedly kicked into life in the second half when Andy Carroll stole a march on Chris Samba and superbly guided home Joey Barton’s free-kick to notch his second goal in three games.

Again, St James’ Park held its breath anticipating an onslaught but second half sub Nile Ranger – on for struggling and injured Shola Ameobi – couldn’t get himself into the game.

In fact the major talking point of the second period was Barton’s dig on Pederson following David Hoilett’s blatant dive in the penalty area. The midfielder escaped with no punishment from referee Mike Jones but replays showed he struck the Norweigan midfielder – and the FA are sure to review the footage.

In truth neither side looked particularly ambitious in the final stages but Roberts, effective as ever, bustled a late winner that settled the game.

If there was one silver lining it was another goal for Carroll, heading for an England call-up thanks to his terrific recent form. In a shock move, Fabio Capello is also understood to be considering recently returned right-back Danny Simpson for a Three Lions call.
