Jonas Gutierrez firmly in Chris Hughton's plans

CHRIS Hughton has hinted that Jonas Gutierrez could be set for an Eastlands recall.

Newcastle United’s Argentina international has found himself out in the cold since the arrival of Hatem Ben Arfa and Cheik Tiote but his impressive cameo appearance against Stoke put him back in contention for the Manchester City clash on Sunday.

Gutierrez looked refreshed against the Potters and is firmly in the frame if United manager Hughton decides to reshuffle his midfield pack. Either Wayne Routledge or Ben Arfa – who may be moved to a more central role – may give way. “I thought Jonas was good when he came on against Stoke. He was never out of my thoughts to be honest – he is a player who offers us plenty,” Hughton said.

“He has missed a couple of league games for us but it is very much a squad game and he played well against Chelsea in the Carling Cup. He has probably been a bit unfortunate really.

“When he came off the bench he showed us exactly what he does well. He is direct, and I think there was one run in particular where he ran from one end of the pitch to the other which took a bit of the pressure off and turned defence into attack.

“I’m well aware of what Jonas can do and of course he’s in my thoughts as they all are.”

Hughton is understood to be pondering changes for the Manchester City clash, although it appears unlikely that he will abandon the 4-5-1 formation that has worked well away from home so far this season. Four points on the road – including an excellent win against Everton last time out – is a decent return from some tough games and the Newcastle boss believes it offers the flexibility that United require on the road.
