Kevin Nolan is still ace in hole for Hughton

KEVIN Nolan remains Chris Hughton’s “Captain Fantastic” and top choice to play ‘in the hole’ despite the disappointment of defeat against Stoke.
The Newcastle skipper has occupied the space in behind Andy Carroll in every league game this season – scoring three goals and performing the role of link man in Hughton’s favoured 4-4-1-1 formation.
But after a disappointing display at St James’ Park, there have been calls from some to give new boy Hatem Ben Arfa more of a free role for the trip to Manchester City.
Hughton – who also confirmed he will retain James Perch at right-back despite his own goal on Sunday – rejects that point of view, and retains the utmost faith in key man Nolan.
“Kevin is a big, big player for us. He is key to what we do,” Hughton told The Journal.
“What he does for us is play in the important role either off the front man or in the midfield and he will always get into goalscoring positions – that is what makes him important.
“Even in a very tight game against Stoke, he was in that position to get our best opportunity of the second half. I have no worries about a player like Kevin.”
While it appears highly unlikely that Hughton will ring the changes for the trip to Eastlands, he is careful to make it
clear that no one is assured of their place.
The Newcastle boss will not be sent back to the drawing board by defeat against the Potters but he will be keeping an eye on the form of Jonas Gutierrez, Sol Campbell, Shola Ameobi and others during the week.
“Of course, we have a lot of players pushing for a starting place against Manchester City, which is a very positive thing,” Hughton said.
