Williamson is just glad to be back playing

Even Williamson’s own move, which should have been straightforward given the willingness of all parties to get it down quickly, ended up mired in uncertainty because of Pompey’s precarious bank balance.

Now able to reflect on one of the most turbulent spells of his professional career, Williamson is just delighted to be back in action.

He has illustrated that desperation to play with two solid displays to get his United career off to a promising start. Williamson said: “You want stability in your life on and off the field.

“I just wanted to be playing – some players are the opposite of that, they will pick up the pay check and do not care about playing. I just want to play as many games as possible.

“It was difficult at Portsmouth. They were good, they were getting on with it and they are coming together as a team. They are cracking on - I hope they stabilise and stay up. It was difficult, but at the end of the day we did get paid.

“It was tough not playing, but it was just one of those things. I had not played for five months and have now have played two games in four days. I am finding my feet and I am going to feel stronger the more games I play.

“I have a nice rest now until tomorrow, but the games come thick and fast in February.”

Williamson was one of Hughton’s key January signings but arrived with five others as Newcastle looked to add Championship know-how to see out the final 19 fixtures of their second tier campaign. They brought in Fitz Hall, Wayne Routledge, Danny Simpson, Leon Best and Patrick van Aanholt – and Williamson has been impressed by the calibre of their signings.

He added: “This is a massive club and everyone knows the aim for the season. The club has shown its determination over the last few days in the transfer market and they are setting their stall out.”
