NUFC boss Chris Hughton happy with a point

CHRIS Hughton admitted Newcastle United were happy to escape Hillsborough with a point after a below-par second half left them soaking up Sheffield Wednesday pressure.

United’s lead at the top of the Championship was shaved to eight points following James O’Connor’s second-half leveller, which cancelled out the advantage they held following Kevin Nolan’s 11th goal of the season and a third goal in three starts for Shola Ameobi.

However, it was not a satisfactory days’ work for a United side which looked below the high standards set in recent weeks.

Hughton admitted: “I think whenever you are leading a game and do not see it out, you are a bit disappointed.

“We did not start the game that well and gave away a poor goal by our standards.

“Once you get back into the game and go ahead, it makes it doubly disappointing if you do not go and finish the job off.

“In the end, it was about not conceding, but we could not do that.
