Hard work is the key to being a hit with fans says Marlon

Marlon Harewood

MARLON Harewood has been told that improving his workrate will help him win over sceptical Newcastle United supporters.

After a bright start to his three-month loan at St James’ Park the bustling striker has suffered a serious dip in form.

And he was on the receiving end of some fierce criticism following a limp display in the Nottingham Forest defeat in October.

A two-game exile from the starting line-up followed but he won his place back for the visit of Peterborough and delivered a much livelier performance alongside Andy Carroll during his side’s routine 3-1 win.

A repentant Harewood took the criticism on the chin and used an interview with The Journal to vow to win over his critics and earn himself a permanent move to United.

With just a few weeks left before he is due to return to Aston Villa, time is running out for him to back up those words with actions but Chris Hughton (right) – who has publicly backed the striker to repay his faith – believes he can do it, and that improving his workrate and taking a leaf out of hard-working team-mates like Alan Smith will be the key to earning the affection of the fans. “Marlon got a good reception when he came off against Peterborough and that was a result of his hard work,” said United's manager.

“The Newcastle fans want to see nice football and their team winning football matches. But, what they always want to see is players that are giving 100% and putting themselves about.

“Marlon put in a workmanlike performance for the team in that game and I think the fans appreciated that.

“And if he can start adding a few goals to those sort of performances then Marlon will be a hit here.”
