Gutierrez: I’ll wear Spiderman mask in future

Danny Simpson scored his first goal in senior football in the second half but Gutiérrez’s non-celebrations were of more interest because since joining 18 months ago, he has promised to mark his goals by donning a Spiderman mask. It had taken until his 45th appearance to find the net.

“It is a shame because I have waited a long time to score,” he said. “I wanted to show the Spiderman mask. I left it in the changing rooms because I saw these words on some websites and was not happy. It is okay, I just want people to know those things were never true.

“Going all that time without a goal was difficult. I have been trying my best for the team but when you don’t score it prays on your mind. I have always thought it would be important to get the first one. Now I will keep calm, but I try to score in all the games.

“When I score my next goal for sure I will take out the Spiderman mask. I promise to wear it. I have it, I just couldn’t wear it on Saturday.”

Of more concern was one of Newcastle’s few genuine wingers limping off minutes after scoring.

“I have talked to the doctor and he says it is not a problem,” Gutiérrez said. “It is the top of my thigh muscle. In a week or 10 days I hope I’ll be okay.” Even against timid opposition, the Magpies did well not to let the unrest stop them consolidating top spot in the Championship.

“The crowd were shouting to the owner but we try not to think about that because it can be difficult for us,” added Gutiérrez. “The only thing we think about is to win and get three points. If we do that the crowd will be happy.

“I have met the owner and think he is doing really good things for Newcastle. We know Chris Hughton is the manager now and that is very important.

“I want to win promotion with Newcastle and go to the World Cup with Argentina. I am working hard for both.

“I talked with (national boss) Diego Maradona and he is happy for me to be in the Championship. He has really helped me and I would like to think it has helped Newcastle too!”
