New bidder enters race to buy United

Newcastle were put on the market days after being relegated from the top flight in May, with Ashley making his £100m asking price. The sportswear magnate tried unsuccessfully to sell United in 2008, but took the club off the market when he was unable to find a suitable buyer.
Newcastle’s former executive director (football) Dennis Wise suggested this weekend his friend would retain control of the club “at least until they get promoted”.
Were Moat’s consortium to succeed in buying the club, one of his first moves would be to reinstate Alan Shearer as manager. The television pundit was in caretaker control for the final eight games of last season, but was unable to lead the team to safety. Moat was part of the organising committee for Shearer’s highly successful testimonial in 2006.
