Mike Ashley awaits Keegan verdict

MIKE Ashley will endure an uncomfortable weekend as he waits for a verdict from the Premier League arbitration panel which heard former manager Kevin Keegan’s claim for constructive dismissal.

The two-week private hearing came to a conclusion yesterday after two weeks of claims and counter claims between Keegan and members of the Newcastle United hierarchy.

But hopes the bitter saga would finally come to an end have been put on hold as the panel has asked to be given more time to consider the evidence and are not expected to reach a final decision until the middle of next week.

Richard Bevan, chief executive of the League Managers’ Association, made the following statement: “Having heard the evidence from both sides, the Panel has reserved judgement and there will be no further comment on the process until they have published their findings.”

Keegan is seeking at least £9m compensation for the events leading up to his controversial departure 12 months ago, although Ashley has counter-sued and is seeking £2m for breach of contract.

However, The Journal understands reports Keegan is looking for a settlement of £25m to include loss of future earnings are false.

Claims Ashley would also put the club into administration should the panel rule in Keegan’s favour also appear to be misleading, as the sports shop entrepreneur would lose far more than if he just agreed to pay the money to the former manager.
