Mike Ashley's warning to Barry Moat

Although United’s managing director Derek Llambias denied the club have already offered the job to David O’Leary, it is understood the Irishman is the leading candidate to become the new manager.

Indeed, given that Shearer has not spoken to Ashley since May and has had no contact with Llambias since last month, it is almost certain the former Magpies skipper will have to wait until

Ashley (pictured above) leaves before he gets another crack at the manager’s job.

O’Leary has not managed since he left Aston Villa in 2006 and is desperate – as was Joe Kinnear – for any sort of opening for him to return to football.

That is likely to ensure he is receptive to Ashley’s approach if and when it comes and, while the Irishman is no Shearer, most will agree he is a preferable option to Kinnear.

The eccentric former Wimbledon boss has alienated many with his ramblings over the summer, in which he has criticised United fans for their attitude to Ashley and their worship of Kevin Keegan and Shearer.

Meanwhile, Jonás Gutiérriez is the latest United player looking to leave the club after Greek giants Olympiacos expressed an interest in signing the winger over the weekend.

Gutiérriez, who has been left out of his country’s latest international get-together, is keen to leave Tyneside as he wants to ensure he is in the Argentina squad for the World Cup in South Africa next summer.

He said: “I told my agent that I wouldn’t say no to Olympiacos if they are going to make a good offer to me. Of course, everything depends on Newcastle.

“I have four more years’ contract with the English club and Olympiacos must agree with them first of all.

“My agent told me that the upcoming week is going to be crucial. He is expecting a new contact with Olympiacos on Monday.

“I know about Olympiacos and that they are a huge club. They are the Boca Juniors or the River Plate of Greece.

“For me it is a big challenge to play in the Champions League. I have a lot of energy in me and I want to make a fantastic season in order to be with my national team in South Africa for the World Cup.

“I want to leave Newcastle and go to a club which will give me the chance to fight for this place in my national team.

“I believe if I play well in the Champions League then (Argentina coach Diego) Maradona is going to take a look at me.”
