Chris Hughton's praise for Newcastle stars

CHRIS Hughton has reminded Newcastle United’s disgruntled players fitness comes first as he urged them to continue to ignore the turmoil which plagues the club.

Another week has passed without a resolution to the frustrating takeover saga which is proving increasingly damaging to the Magpies’ chances of making an immediate return to the Premier League.

But, with a pre-season friendly against Darlington to consider today, Hughton has praised the players for their professionalism even though many are desperate to leave the stricken club.

The Journal revealed yesterday that nobody will be allowed to leave St James’s Park until new owners are in place, an embargo which is sure to infuriate many of the players who failed to keep United in the top flight.

Hughton, though, believes they have been forced to accept the fact that, wherever their future lies, it is vital they work properly on their fitness levels ahead of the new season.

He said: “I can’t fault the player’s application. I think they realise that, whatever is happening off the pitch, or whatever happens to them in the future in terms of leaving the club or staying, they need their fitness.

“I’ve not had any cause for complaint from any of them and that has made my job a lot easier.

“It isn’t an ideal situation for anyone, but fitness comes first. We had a good few days training in Ireland and that has continued since we got back.

“Everyone has got their head down and got on with things. The day-to-day training has been something to focus on and I think the games help as well. We have been concentrating on that. This is a crucial time of the year because it’s when you get the core fitness for the season.
