Sporting heroes go head to head in golf match

He said: “My rounds were pretty good, it’s been a fantastic day and nice weather, and I’ve been hitting the ball pretty well which is always good. We don’t get to play that much golf because the England schedule can be so hectic but I’m always keen to get around it. Of course it’s great being back in the region, and back with my family, this is my time off after the Twenty World Cup to relax and mentally recuperate. Its great to be out playing golf and seeing a charity benefit from it.”

Big Jack Charlton was quick to play down his golfing skills.

He said: “I just got a phone call asking me to come down to play golf. My game is non existent so I’ve never held out much hope of winning.

“But it’s a beautiful day and it’s always nice to be here. I’ve always done a lot for the Variety Club and I’m pleased to support their fundraising.”

Yesterday morning top Scottish golfer Sam Torrance took time out to offer youngsters from Sunderland’s Southwick Primary School some tips on the game. The school was recently presented with one of the Variety Club’s Sunshine coaches.

Chairman at the Variety Club for the Northern Region Bob Gladwin said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be involved with the prestigious golf championship and very grateful indeed to the De Vere Hotel group.”
