A FRIEND recently introduced me to the splendid ‘20 Barrels’ range from Chilean producer, Cono Sur.
I was impressed. The 2007 Sauvignon Blanc is marked not only by very ripe citrus fruit, but lingering minerality. The 2006 Chardonnay has masses of luscious peachy fruit, with subtle oaking and the 2006 Merlot is a glorious effort – big and brambly, but with balancing juicy acidity. The soft, sweet 2007 Pinot Noir is almost as good. Oddbins have the Sauvignon Blanc at £14.49 and Morrisons have the Pinot Noir at £16.99, but go online to www.Tesco.com/wine and you can order a case of all four, plus the 20 Barrels Cabernet Sauvignon and Cono Sur’s best bubbly at the special offer price of £66.
A FORTNIGHT ago I recommended Taylors wonderful Quinta de Vargellas 1998 Vintage Port. I'm delighted to learn that it's also available from Richard Granger at £24.44 - cheaper than the big chains and supermarkets. Visit www .richardgrangerwines.co.uk.
