Danny Guthrie aware CV could be tarnished by NUFC relegation

“While it’s still possible you have to believe. I haven’t contemplated going down, even though it’s there, it’s a realism. I’m just concentrating on the positives, we
have to keep believing. It’s disappointing not to have won (against Portsmouth). The fans’ reaction at the end of the game, you can feel their frustration.
“It’s also frustrating being a player too, it’s hard to take when your fans react like that but you can understand it because they expect a lot from the team. We expect a lot from ourselves too. We’ve built it up as a must-win and we only got the draw – but we still don’t know how good that point’s going to be.
“We had chances to win. The more the game went on the more open it became. You definitely didn’t want to lose the game, because a point at the end of the day might keep us up.
“You have to take that positive out of it. The teams around us lost at the weekend, so results went for us and we gained an extra point. I know it’s not three points but we did gain a point and that could prove vital at the end of the season.”
Meanwhile, Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has revealed he hopes Newcastle avoid relegation this season.
Last month Whelan said Magpies owner and business rival Mike Ashley had “no class” and that he “got what he deserved at Newcastle”. But he has now admitted he would like to see them stay up. “Newcastle are such a big club, it would be a crying shame if they go down,” said Whelan. “They’ve got a wonderful, wonderful set of supporters. I can’t imagine them going down. I know it’s happened before, but I sincerely hope they don’t go down.
“I think West Brom are already down. Middlesbrough and Newcastle look very, very likely, which is a shame because it’s so awful fighting relegation in the Premier League.”
